Annuity Clarity Resource Center
Understanding Annuities:
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Cut Through the Noise and Understand How Annuities Really Work
Annuities can provide valuable retirement benefits — but they can also be complicated, expensive or poorly understood. This resource center is being created to help retirees and pre-retirees understand what annuities actually do, how the different types work, where guarantees come from, what they can cost and the questions to ask before making a decision.

About the Book
Annuities Aren't Good or Bad. The Details Matter.
Few retirement products generate as much confusion as annuities. Some are designed primarily to provide predictable income. Others offer tax deferral, market participation or protection features. Contract terms, fees, liquidity provisions, guarantees and optional riders can vary substantially from one product to another.
That means the better question is rarely: “Are annuities good or bad?”
“What does this particular annuity do, what does it cost, what are the tradeoffs, and does it serve a clear purpose within the retirement plan?”
Understanding Annuities: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly is designed to help readers separate useful features from unnecessary complexity and evaluate annuities with greater clarity.

Start With the Purpose — Not the Product
A retirement plan may already include Social Security, pensions, investment accounts, cash reserves, real estate and other income sources. Before deciding whether an annuity belongs in that picture, it helps to answer three fundamental questions.
What problem are we trying to solve?
Define the specific need an annuity would address before evaluating any product.
What are we giving up in exchange for the benefit?
Every guarantee has a tradeoff — in liquidity, cost, growth potential or flexibility.
Does the annuity improve the overall retirement plan?
Evaluate the contract in the context of the entire plan, not in isolation.
